Theatr/e Cymreig : Welsh and wonderful
What would you say if I told you that in less than seven years, children born via gamete donation will, for the first time in the UK, be entitled to trace their donor parent? Would you remember parliament voting through the law change 11 years ago? Will it affect your child, a friend’s child, a relative?
And what if I told you that, despite this law change, not every donor child will consider searching because a lot won’t actually know how they were conceived? Their families have no legal obligation to tell them. (Things are very different in New Zealand.) Would you have an opinion about this?
And how do you think a donor parent would feel if traced? A lot can happen in 18 years. Do you think, confronted with their genetic offspring, they might feel guilty? Or pleased? Or indifferent maybe? And what if they have a partner?…
